- Navigating community resources and appointments
- Enhancing social skills and building support networks
Sessions are typically one hour long and can be offered in home or community settings, tailored to each person's specific needs and goals. This service is part of the broader spectrum of mental health and substance abuse services available to support individuals on their journey towards recovery.
Who Qualifies for Mental Health Skill-Building Services in Virginia?
To be eligible for MHSS, individuals must meet the following criteria:
- **Primary Mental Health Diagnosis:** A documented diagnosis of a serious mental illness, such as:
- Schizophrenia or other psychotic disorders
- Major depressive disorder
- Bipolar I or II disorder
- Any other serious mental health disorder, as documented by a physician within the past year, that results in severe and recurrent disability and functional limitations in major life activities
- **Need for Individualized Skill-Building:** Requires training in basic living skills, which include:
- Symptom management
- Medication adherence
- Personal hygiene and nutrition
- Money management
- Use of community resources
- **History of Intensive Mental Health Treatment:** A documented history of any of the following:
- Psychiatric hospitalization
- Crisis stabilization services
- Intensive Community Treatment (ICT) or Program of Assertive Community Treatment (PACT)
- Placement in a psychiatric residential treatment facility
- Temporary Detention Order (TDO) evaluation
- **Medication History:** Has been prescribed antipsychotic, mood-stabilizing, or antidepressant medications within the past 12 months or has documented medical contraindications for such medications.
- **Age-Specific Criteria:**
- Ages 21 and older: Must meet the above criteria.
- Ages 18–20: Must not be living in a supervised setting and may receive outpatient psychological care services up to six months prior to transitioning to independent living.
This comprehensive approach to skill-building for recovery ensures that individuals receive the support necessary to thrive in their communities.
Our ASAM 2.1 Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) is tailored for individuals seeking structured support through mental health and substance abuse services during their recovery journey. This program is ideal for those who do not require 24-hour residential care, as it balances treatment with flexibility. Clients can maintain their daily responsibilities, such as working, attending school, or caring for their families, while receiving the necessary outpatient psychological care.
Program highlights:
- 9 hours per week of structured treatment
- Services provided 3 days a week, about 3 hours per session
- A combination of group therapy, individual counseling, family support, relapse prevention, and skill-building for recovery
- Focused on reducing substance use, strengthening coping skills, and building a supportive recovery network
Who Qualifies for ASAM 2.1 / IOP?
To qualify for this level of care, individuals must:
- Have a diagnosed substance use disorder (alcohol or drugs)
- Require more treatment than standard outpatient counseling but do not need residential or inpatient care
- Be able to participate safely in an outpatient setting
- Show a need for structured therapy to address relapse risk, cravings, coping skills, and life management
- Demonstrate a willingness to engage in treatment and work toward recovery goals
